This evening as I was scanning the TV channels, I came acroos the Priceville TV program. I watched this program and I completed a search on the internet about the TV program to learn more. It is very interesting of the white attitude and how they had disrespectfully treated the Afro heretige. THIS HAS BEEN A BIG EDUCATION FOR ME CONERNING THE AFRO-CANADIAN PEOPLE IN OUR CANADIAN HISTORY.
It is time for all to expose the truth, and real history of our fore-fathers regardless of their race. It is a huge TERRIBLE shame on our Canadian history, but it is important when showing the past history to produce the real picture of truth. If this is not done, then the stories told are not history, but only corrupt misleading tales with evil intentions.

Comments: Thanks for a fascinating and informative overview of Afro-Canadians' early history, and the final destination point of the Underground Railroad! It is interesting that the Canadian/British Emancipation came almost 20 years before ours in the U.S. (which was partial, applying only to the Confederate States.)

Comments: I was searching for information on Emancipation, from other countries. Our assoc. ACET is trying to get our day reinstated, because over here it was replace as a summer's holiday at the end of August, and this is our 3rd year celebrating.

Comments: When I look at the work all of you have done I feel like crying because it is so wonderful, I know our parents and grandparents who have gone on would be so very proud of all of you. Our daughter Deanna & her husband were to get up this year but as fate would have it the transmission went on their car the week before they were to leave. I wanted to be in Owen Sound for the special events but my husband (Donald MacDonald) has a favorite nephew who I love too and he is being married tomorrow July 31st, I need to be here. My heart and my spirit are with you all as you commemorate those many who were captured, as you celebrate their escape and rejoice in the fact that because they sought refuge here in Canada we now call this great country home! Comments: Moved over to Markdale, ON. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, lived in UK for many years till i met my present husband, from BC. Didn’t like west coast, so we bought house here in Markdale, Ontario and found out that Owen Sound was nearest city. Am happy to find out that there are other cultures here, besides Caucasian. One feels a bit bubbed, and out of touch. It’s great to see a black cultural society here. Great history. Would love to meet all of you one day. Blessings

Comments: I heard from a very reliable source that Oprah might be a guest at the picnic this year? If she doesn't show it won't matter I’ll be there just as I have every year since I was born. Well maybe I have missed one ore two picnics since 1964 but I promise as long as I am alive. Comments: I left Owen Sound to go to University and never went back to live. I visit family a couple times a year. A distant cousin from Sask. contacted me because she is writing a book on our family history. I asked why and she told me about my great, great grandfather. He was an African slave and had taken the underground railway to Owen Sound in 1860. This was a huge family secret my parents did not even know. My cousin completed the family tree right back to the date he arrived. I am so proud of this but I thought I was the only one until I was watching the emancipation picnic on the news. I didn't know there were people with similar backgrounds I could talk to. I want to learn so much more. I come from a family of rednecks (LOL LOL LOL)but I think this information is something they can all be proud of. Could someone from the committee please contact me? I would like to talk to someone to find out more. I’ll be visiting Family soon and would like to see the museum of black history and the memorial place. I see Owen Sound very differently know.

Comments: As each year passes i find myself looking forward to this amazing day of the picnic.introducing and re-introducing myself to " my family" and to my heritage that i have missed out on for much too long. This day gives me and my 4 sisters and brother a chance to gather with relatives who we don’t get a chance to see often enough. I never took the time to get to know my dad's family well enough and on this day when i see my uncle Frank (Courtney) i sometimes feel like i have a closeness to my dad (Herb Courtney). This is a great day and i will continue to bring my children for as long as i can! Thanks!

Comments: I had never heard of the annual emancipation celebration until hearing it broadcast on radio station CFRB 1010. I would like to attend the picnic next year. My great great grandfather was Rev. R.A. Ball the minister at the BME church in Toronto for many years. One of his sons, was the pastor of the AME Zion Church in Rochester N.Y. Both father and son were instrumental in helping the slaves through the Underground Railroad. I am looking forward to visiting Owen Sound and the BME church for the annual Emancipation Celebration.

Comments: My Grand Father Nathan James Woods” I never had the chance to see my grand parents. Nathan was killed in an accident while working in the Quarries around Hepworth. I believe other relatives are buried there or around Willianford/Negro Creek area. Anyone with info on my relatives please e-mail me. Great grand-father Thomas Green, son of John Green, and his father Thomas Green who came thru the underground railway from Washington County, Maryland, USA On January 01, 2005, Molly Green Miller contacted me and as it turns out is my grandfathers niece. Comments: I am proud to be the 5th generation and that my children are the 6th generation to live here in Owen Sound. To be part of the history of the Underground Railroad has motivated me to who I am and will also mold who my children will become. I thank the picnic for each year that i have been privileged to go. It has brought my children and myself closer to family and friends. The picnic gives us a sense of foundation and togetherness and to know that my children will grow up and go to the picnic to keep that legacy going is a great think. Comments: I was raised in Owen Sound area and as a family we were ALWAYS a part of the Picnic...those times are some of my most happy memories. I have missed it the past few years but have plans to come to the 145th!! I was so pleased to find this website because as my mom has said - our heritage is precious.
